Big J Mobile Homes: Our Family Story in Odessa, TX

The Johnson family has moved homes in West Texas since 1968 and sold mobile homes in Odessa since 1980. Here's the Big J Mobile Homes story.

11/2/2026

Big J Mobile Homes has been part of Odessa since 1980, but the Johnson family's roots in moving and selling homes across West Texas go back much further. If you're shopping for a mobile or manufactured home in Odessa or anywhere in Ector County, here's a look at who we are, where we came from, and what that history means when you buy from us today.

A family that came west

Our family's story starts in the early 1930s, when West Texas was considered one of the last frontiers. As our About Us page tells it, John "Jack" Olsen, an immigrant from Denmark, "came west seeking his fortune." The family story includes "a trailer house made out of tank steel pulled behind a converted Cadillac car."

On the Johnson side, L.A. Johnson worked as a mule skinner moving oil rigs across the region. V. W. Johnson, the next generation, went on to work as a house mover in West Texas for about 30 years. Moving homes, and doing it carefully over long West Texas roads, became the family trade.

1968: Big J Transport

In 1968, Dan Johnson opened Big J Transport, putting the skills he had learned moving houses and mobile homes to work in his own business. That's why you'll see us say the family has been at this for more than five decades: the Johnson family has been moving homes in West Texas since 1968.

1980: Big J Mobile Homes opens in Odessa

In 1980, Dan Johnson opened Big J Mobile Homes. Both businesses are still going today, run by Rodney Johnson and Todd Johnson. In the family's own words, "Together we continue to teach and employ the next generation of Johnson's hard work we put into our family-owned business."

Big J Mobile Homes says it has helped over 100,000 families find a home that fits their lifestyle and budget. Whatever the exact count, the idea behind it hasn't changed since 1980: help West Texas families get into a home they can afford.

Faith, family and hard work

Ask anyone in the family what drives the business and you'll hear the same three words. As our About page puts it, "At Big J Mobile Homes, we firmly embrace the core values of faith, family, and hard work, which have been the foundation of our establishment."

For you as a buyer, that shows up in a few practical ways:

  • You're dealing with a family business. Big J is still run by members of the Johnson family.
  • Moving homes is in our roots. The family has moved houses and mobile homes across West Texas for generations.
  • We're local. You'll find us on Andrews Highway in Odessa.

What we sell today

Today, Big J Mobile Homes is a full-service provider of manufactured homes in Odessa, with single-wide and double-wide homes from factories including Clayton, Jessup Housing, TRU Homes and Cavco. You can browse our full selection on our homes page.

The Denali from Clayton's Alpine Series is a 32' x 68' home with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 1,873 square feet.

The El Capitan, also from the Alpine Series, has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 1,680 square feet in a 32' x 56' layout.

If you need more room, the Atlas offers 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 2,220 square feet.

Buying with confidence in Texas

Whoever you buy from, Texas has rules that protect you. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) states that a license is required to sell or exchange two or more manufactured homes to a consumer in a 12-month period, that salespeople must be licensed and sponsored by a licensed, bonded retailer or broker, and that anyone installing or re-leveling a manufactured home must be licensed and bonded with TDHCA's Manufactured Housing Division. TDHCA also says retailer and salesperson licenses should always be displayed and visible, so feel free to ask to see them.
